Texas in the time of COVID (no bueno); the vaccine rollout (kudos to President Biden); the passage of the much-needed Dem stimulus; and how a princess in the UK is fighting the same fight as Latinas in the U.S.

The election is over, and so is our NIGHTMARE. Most of America danced and celebrated this weekend after the Presidential Election was won by Democrat former VP Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris, who will become the FIRST WOMAN and the FIRST WOC to hold the office. To hear the Republicans tell it, Latinos voted for Trump, but on this week’s podcast these Texas Latinos discuss the outcome and what it means for America.

El Paso is probably the #1 city impacted by COVID19. But who wins when a county and its largest city are in dispute about how to best fight the coronavirus? This week, special guest El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego explains the new strategy to defeat the coronavirus and the legal battle he’s facing with the Texas Attorney General. Plus, is Texas still red? Or, is it now a legitimately purple — or blue — state? And why are Latinos (and women) a big reason for the shift? Our discussion two days before the historic presidential election.

This week, we discuss the possibility of Texas going Purple — or even Blue — and the CRAZY that’s already taking place with the election. We’re joined by our fellow Latina and attorney Stephanie Townsend Allala for a deep dive into Trumpsterism and their willingness to give it all up (life, liberty, jobs) for this guy in the White House. Also, are our kids turning away from religion because of conservatives? And, does the Democratic party need to work harder (much harder) to get out the Latino vote.

Civil unrest continues with the shooting (in the back) of Jacob Blake. The key takeaway for people of color: don’t walk away from the police, apparently you can be shot in the back (seven times). Plus, the breaking of the U.S. Postal Service; the Postmaster General’s excuses, excuses, excuses in his testimony before the U.S. House and Senate. And, the lies have started at the Republican convention. Why is lying the new norm for the GOP?

Week of August 25, 2020 | Latinos Matter podcast | Republicans failing the unemployed

The Latinos Matter podcast, featuring Hector Montes, Emily Jauregui and Stephanie Townsend Allala, with audio editing by Bryan Alcantar.

The Republican-led U.S. Senate went home, again, without doing their jobs, leaving millions of unemployed Americans without hope.
They won’t even be back until after the Labor Day holiday in September!

Meanwhile, Trump is trying to pretend he’s saving the day through executive orders he says will provide extended unemployment benefits and other protections for the unemployed. They won’t. Only the U.S. Congress has the power of the purse.

Somehow Trump doesn’t think Americans will notice when supplemental unemployment compensation fails to hit their bank accounts.

Still, Republican Senate Majority Leader  Mitch McConnell, a millionaire, isn’t even in talks with the Democrats, who passed a Coronavirus relief package more than two months ago. I guess Mitch believes everyone has as much money as he does in their bank accounts.

Week of August 16, 2020 | Dems snub our own Latino leaders

The Latinos Matter podcast, featuring Hector Montes, Emily Jauregui and Stephanie Townsend Allala, with audio editing by Bryan Alcantar.

The Democratic Party is having its convention this week to nominate Joe Biden as its presidential candidate. Hoping to excite its base, they’ve included a diverse representation, including Republicans who have bailed on Trump, but they are failing at including the top Latino leader: Fmr. HUD Sec. Julian Castro, who ran for president as well and beat EVERYONE at all of the debates this year. Another top Latina, the youngest person ever to become a U.S. representative, is also being disrespected: AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) will have all of 60 seconds to address the nation.

Three states don’t allow you to vote by mail/absentee without “a good” reason: Mississippi, Missouri and Texas, giving us another GREAT reason why Texas needs to go BLUE.” Meanwhile, the Republican-led U.S. Senate went home early for a long weekend, while letting additional unemployment benefits expire for more than 30 million Americans.

Plus, Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen (who’s serving his prison term at home due to COVID 19) says his book about Trump will be released BEFORE the Nov. 3 presidential election. Cohen promises the book will be devastating for Trump. Cohen is in prison for covering up Trump’s “dirty deeds.”

July 30, 2020 | Yes, it’s back! The Latinos Matter podcast returns to discuss news and politics.

The Latinos Matter podcast, featuring Hector Montes, Emily Jauregui and Stephanie Townsend Allala, with audio editing by Bryan Alcantar.

This week, we remember Voting Rights and Civil Rights champion Rep. John Lewis; give kudos to U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for her smack down of her misogynist Republican colleagues (Rep. Yoho in particular); and discuss what is now called the Trump Depression (yes, Depression, with a D), following the 33% drop in GDP: the largest EVER. And, no, Trump cannot change the date of the Presidential election.
